Xiaolu Guo brings her unique blend of her heritage of ancient Chinese folk legends and her fresh take on contemporary living to this mesmerising new novel. ‘I am China’ is a love story of modern times and a vibrant, wise (and very funny) portrayal of multicultural society.

Biography

XIAOLU GUO was born in China and now lives in London. She is the author of Village of Stone (the translation was shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award); A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers which was shortlisted for the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction and has been translated into twenty-four languages, 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth which was long-listed for the Man Asian Literary Prize, UFO in her Eyes, recently made into an award-winning film by Xiaolu herself, and a collection of short stories, Lovers in the Age of Indifference. Xiaolu Guo is a successful filmmaker of feature films and documentaries; her work has premiered all over the world, including MOMA in New York and most recently at the BFI London Film Festival and Venice Film Festival. In 2013 she was named as one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists.

Xiaolu Guo I Am China
Xiaolu Guo
Xiaolu Guo is also Free Word Writer in Residence for Weather Stations in 2014, an international project that explores how literature and storytelling can inspire new ways of living in the context of our changing climate. Working with partners in London, Berlin, Dublin, Warsaw and Melbourne, Weather Stations asks five writers to explore how we might live differently given the degradation of our environment. Forming the backbone of the project Xiaolu Guo and her fellow Writers in Residence will work with climate and social scientists, philosophers and politicians, economists and environmentalists to publically discuss and dissect the most fundamental challenge facing humanity today – climate change. Guo will also work with Islington Arts and Media school to explore how we can inspire young citizens to fight for a more sustainable future.

Selected as one of

Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists
Shortlisted for the Orange Prize for A Concise Chinese–English Dictionary for Lovers
Longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize for 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth
Longlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for Village of Stone
Shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize for Village of Stone
From http://www.soas.ac.uk/sci/events/09jul2014–i-am-china.html#.U41nGpKb6zI.twitter

 Date: 9 July 2014Time: 6:00 PM Fi … Continue reading →

[161
304
