{"id":1238,"date":"2014-06-05T19:32:58","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T19:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=1238"},"modified":"2014-06-05T19:32:58","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T19:32:58","slug":"baird-statement-on-25th-anniversary-of-tiananmen-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/baird-statement-on-25th-anniversary-of-tiananmen-square","title":{"rendered":"Baird Statement on 25th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;line-height: 1.7\">June 4, 2014 &#8211; Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of all Canadians, we join with Chinese citizens and people around the world in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing\u2019s Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada urges China to break its silence on these events by openly accounting for the people who were killed, detained or went missing and by launching a process of national healing and reconciliation. Only by publicly acknowledging a difficult past can nations pave the way to a more harmonious future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada is deeply troubled by indications of a crackdown in the lead-up to the anniversary, such as recent arrests and detentions of individuals for peacefully expressing their views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the Chinese constitution, Chinese citizens enjoy freedom of speech, assembly and association. The detention of individuals for exercising these rights runs counter to China\u2019s domestic and international human rights obligations.
