Image: Lunar New Year via Flickr.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly five years ago, on December 6, 2008, <!--more-->Liu Xiaobo happily told me on Skype that there were already over 180 people who had co-signed Charter 08, an online manifesto for democracy and reform in China that he and his friend Zhang Zuhua initiated. \u201cPeople are not afraid of the pressure, the signatures are still ongoing,\u201d Liu said enthusiastically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cXiaobo, you must be careful,\u201d I said. \u201cYou know the old Party phrase: Shoot the bird that stretches its head out of the nest first.\u201d I was worried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHang on, there\u2019s someone at the door. I\u2019ll call you later,\u201d Liu replied.
