{"id":1892,"date":"2014-06-27T03:21:45","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T03:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=1892"},"modified":"2014-06-27T03:21:45","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T03:21:45","slug":"perry-link-commented-the-confucius-institutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/perry-link-commented-the-confucius-institutes","title":{"rendered":"Perry Link Commented the Confucius Institutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;line-height: 1.7\">Monday, June 23, 2014 &#8211; 1:07pm<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinafile.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/epsacrop_220x220\/public\/assets\/images\/profile\/perry-link2011_0.jpg?itok=ius7FjD5\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bob Kapp is right that China has a \u201cmarvelous cultural repertoire,\u201d that Americans should learn more about it, that Chinese culture is best learned through Chinese language, that Chinese-language programs in North America need more resources, and that it would be nice if China pitched in.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>None of that is the point, of course. What the AAUP objects to, rightly, is the problem of \u201cunacceptable concessions to the political aims and practices of the government of China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago Steven Levine, at the University of Montana, as part of his Tiananmen Initiative Project, wrote to about 200 Confucius Institutes around the world asking what plans they had for marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of June 4, 1989\u2014by any account an important day in modern Chinese history, one that people interested in China should know about. Levine received no responses. Not one. He did hear, informally, that his letter caused consternation on some campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Bob Kapp\u2019s answer to dangers of political interference is that there be \u201cstated commitments\u201d and that if someone \u201coversteps a line\u201d we fix the problem, \u201cpush the reset button,\u201d and move on.<\/p>\n<p>My goodness. Are we still this na\u00efve in our understanding of how self-censorship works? (The view, not the person, is naive.)
