Peter Humphrey was planning to leave China when he got the fateful phone call; would he take \u00a320,000 for one last job?<\/p>\n
Two months later, Chinese police officers carried out a noon raid on his office and home, seizing hard drives and evidence.<\/p>\n
They threw the 58-year-old British investigator and his wife, who he always worked with, into a jail in Shanghai.<\/p>\n
GlaxoSmithKline, whose shilling Mr Humphrey had taken, quickly washed its hands of the couple and has yet to provide any financial support or legal advice.<\/p>\n
After a year in detention, in worsening health, they now face a closed trial which their family and diplomats cannot attend.<\/p>\n
