HRIC has learned that, Chen Shuqing (\u9648\u6811\u5e86), a core member of the China Democracy Party\u2019s Zhejiang Committee, has been formally arrested. The official charge cannot be confirmed at this point, but Chen has been in criminal detention for more than a month on charges of \u201csubversion of state power.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chen\u2019s wife, Zhang Donghong (\u5f20\u4e1c\u7ea2), told Human Rights in China that when she went to the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau yesterday, she was informed that the Procuratorate had approved the arrest of Chen, and a notice had been sent by mail. Zhang said that since the beginning of the ordeal, the family has not seen Chen or received any information about him.<\/p>\n
On September 11 this year, Chen was taken from his home by Domestic Security officers from the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau. Later that day, officers from the same bureau conducted a search in the couple\u2019s home, and took away a desktop computer, a mobile phone, documents, and some badges.<\/p>\n
Previously, Chen served a four-year sentence for \u201cinciting subversion of state power\u201d in connection with his role in organizing the China Democracy Party\u2019s Zhejiang Committee and articles he wrote calling for democratic reform. He was released in September 2010 and soon resumed his activism. In November 2013, he was among six individuals who applied to the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau for a permit to hold a demonstration to call for democratic reform. In 2014, he signed a joint public statement urging the release of detained individuals, and published an account of L\u00fc Gengsong being denied access to his lawyer while in detention.<\/p>\n
Chen was a participant in the 1989 student movement, and began his pro-democracy activism in 1995. He became involved in the preparatory work for organizing the China Democracy Party in 1998, for which involvement he was detained for four months in 1999.<\/p>\n
