{"id":5675,"date":"2015-09-24T00:20:40","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T04:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=5675"},"modified":"2015-09-24T00:20:40","modified_gmt":"2015-09-24T04:20:40","slug":"gao-zhisheng-chinese-lawyer-describes-torture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/gao-zhisheng-chinese-lawyer-describes-torture","title":{"rendered":"Gao Zhisheng: Chinese lawyer describes &#8216;torture&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2015\/09\/85709937_008674675-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5676\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2015\/09\/85709937_008674675-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"_85709937_008674675-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2015\/09\/85709937_008674675-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2015\/09\/85709937_008674675-1.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>23 September 2015<br \/>\nGao Zhisheng during an interview in 2006Image copyrightAP<br \/>\nImage caption<\/p>\n<p>Gao Zhisheng says he was tortured with an electric baton to the face<br \/>\nProminent Chinese dissident and human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng has broken his silence to describe how he was allegedly tortured and kept in solitary confinement while in detention.<\/p>\n<p>The 51-year-old lawyer was released from prison in August 2014.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, his lawyer described Mr Gao, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, as emotionless,<!--more--> &#8220;basically unintelligible&#8221; and missing teeth due to malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gao was speaking to AP, in his first interview in five years.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was tortured with an electric baton to his face and spent three years in solitary confinement.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gao is known for defending members of the Falun Gong movement and Chinese Christians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every time we emerge from the prison alive, it is a defeat for our opponents,&#8221; he told the Associated Press from his home in Shaanxi province.<br \/>\n&#8216;Mission from God&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gao, whose wife and children live in the US, also said he would never seek exile abroad.<\/p>\n<p>He described staying in China as a &#8220;mission&#8221; given to him from God.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gao was convicted of subversion and placed under house arrest in 2006, during which time he claims to have been regularly detained and tortured.<\/p>\n<p>He disappeared in January 2009 before reappearing in March 2010.
