PEN International calls for his immediate and unconditional release.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u2018\u2018Shokjang should be unconditionally released today,<\/em>\u2019 said <strong>Salil Tripathi, Chair of PEN International\u2019s Writers in Prison Committee.<\/strong> <em>\u2018His conviction<\/em> <em>which appears to be politically motivated<\/em><em> is a shocking violation of the right to free speech and opinion and evidence of the continuing crackdown on Tibetan dissident voices by the Chinese authorities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shokjang, Tibetan writer, translator, editor and activist, has published four books, one of which \u2013 <em>The Courage of Path<\/em> \u2013 has reportedly been banned by the Chinese government. He has been detained by the Chinese authorities since his arrest on 19 March 2015 in Rebkong County, North-Eastern Tibet (Tongren County, Qinghai, China) for allegedly engaging in \u2018splittist\u2019 activities. Shokjang was\u00a0arrested for the first time in April 2010, on allegations of leading a student protest and contacting outside writers and the Tibetan Youth Congress in exile. He\u00a0was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/tibet\/writer-believed-to-be-jailed-in-qinghai-province-04082015162607.html\"><span style=\"color: #c60000;\">released on May 8, 2010<\/span><\/a>, with warning from Chinese authorities that he would be watched for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>To read a selection of Shokjang\u2019s writings in English, <a href=\"http:\/\/highpeakspureearth.com\/tag\/shokjang\/\"><span style=\"color: #c60000;\">click here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In March 2008 the Chinese authorities launched a crackdown in the Tibet Autonomous Region, after anti-government protests took place in Lhasa and other areas, with reports of arbitrary arrests and use of excessive force against dissidents.
