He was greeted warmly by journalists, especially at the CCTV head office where a banner was hung up, reading: &#8220;CCTV&#8217;s surname is the Party. We are absolutely loyal. Please inspect us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In return, Xi called upon journalists to pledge absolute loyalty to the Party and to protect its authority and unity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/xi_cctv5.jpg\" alt=\"xi_cctv5\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/xi_cctv5.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/xi_cctv5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/>Shortly afterward, Ren, former chairman of the Hua Yuan Property Company, took to Weibo to say that instead of the Party, Chinese media should serve the people. He argued that news outlets should be in the business of serving those who pay the bills, the taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>In two points that have since been deleted, Ren wrote (via <a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/policies-politics\/article\/1915220\/outspoken-chinese-tycoon-comes-under-fire-attacking-xi?utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=&amp;utm_campaign=SCMPSocialNewsfeed\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">SCMP<\/span><\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When does the people\u2019s government turn into the party\u2019s government? [Are the media] funded by party membership dues? Don\u2019t waste taxpayers\u2019 money on things that not providing them services.Are there two opposite camps now? When all media have surnames and do not represent public interests, the people will be forgotten and abandoned!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6651\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang-weibo-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Ren Zhiqiang-weibo\" width=\"480\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang-weibo-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang-weibo-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang-weibo-450x800.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang-weibo.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/>SCMP reports that on Monday morning, Ren got his first public taste of what the Party thought of his outburst on Weibo. The news website <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Qianlong.com<\/span>, which is affiliated with the Beijing municipal party committee, published an editorial, <a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/finance.sina.com.cn\/review\/jcgc\/2016-02-22\/doc-ifxprucu3072475.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">accusing Ren of spreading anti-Community Party sentiment<\/span><\/a> and even of advocating for the overthrow of the Party in favor of Western-style constitutional rule.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6652\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang1.jpg\" alt=\"Ren Zhiqiang1\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/02\/Ren-Zhiqiang1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/>In 2014, Ren stepped down as head of his property company. He has always been popular and influential on social media where he is called the &#8220;Cannon&#8221; for being unafraid to <a href=\"http:\/\/shanghaiist.com\/2011\/11\/26\/real_estate_tycoon_ren_zhiqiang_on.php\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">voice his controversial views<\/span><\/a> on a variety of issues <a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weibo.com\/renzhiqiang?is_hot=1\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">to his more than 37 million Weibo followers<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, he has generated controversy by suggesting that young people should not be able to afford houses and that people who aren&#8217;t able to afford homes should just return to their village.
