{"id":7400,"date":"2016-08-06T10:24:15","date_gmt":"2016-08-06T14:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=7400"},"modified":"2016-08-07T17:28:30","modified_gmt":"2016-08-07T21:28:30","slug":"the-ludovic-trarieux-human-rights-prize-2016-awarded-to-chinese-lawyer-wang-yu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/the-ludovic-trarieux-human-rights-prize-2016-awarded-to-chinese-lawyer-wang-yu","title":{"rendered":"The Ludovic Trarieux Human Rights Prize 2016 Awarded to Chinese Lawyer Wang Yu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7401\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/08\/Trarieux_2016.jpg\" alt=\"Trarieux_2016\" width=\"400\" height=\"436\" \/>On June 4, 2014, a jury of 24 European lawyers, representing bars from Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, Brussels, Bordeaux, Geneva, Rome, Luxembourg, Paris, and members of the European Bar Human Rights Institute (IDHAE &#8211; l\u2019Institut des Droits de l\u2019Homme des Avocats europ\u00e9ens) and the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA \u2013 International Association of Lawyers), awarded the <strong>21<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup> Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize to Ms. Wang Yu, <\/strong>a Chinese lawyer.<!--more--><br \/>\nMs. Wang Yu is ahuman rights lawyer sadly known for being the first victim to be detained in what has been called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uianet.org\/en\/content\/concerns-about-situation-lawyers-china\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><strong><em>\u201c709 Crackdown\u201d<\/em><\/strong>,<\/span><\/a> one of the harshest actions against the legal profession in China, beginning on July 9, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>She was taken into custody on July 9, 2015, secretly detained and placed under \u201cresidential surveillance in a designated location\u201d. On January 9, 2015 Ms. Wang Yu, was formally charged with subversion against the State. She is currently imprisoned at Tianjin No. 1 Detention Center.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Wang Yu actively worked as a human rights lawyer, undertaking challenging legal cases involving clients who other lawyers feared to represent.
