{"id":7614,"date":"2016-10-04T15:44:14","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T19:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=7614"},"modified":"2016-10-04T15:45:15","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T19:45:15","slug":"joanne-leedom-ackerman-building-literary-bridges-past-and-present","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/joanne-leedom-ackerman-building-literary-bridges-past-and-present","title":{"rendered":"Joanne Leedom-Ackerman: Building Literary Bridges: Past and Present"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7616\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PI82-Ourense.jpg\" alt=\"pi82-ourense\" width=\"480\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PI82-Ourense.jpg 860w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PI82-Ourense-300x95.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PI82-Ourense-768x244.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PI82-Ourense-800x254.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gathered in the ancient city of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galiciaguide.com\/Ourense-index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Ourense, Spain<\/span><\/a> in the heart of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galiciaguide.com\/Galicia-index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Galicia<\/span><\/a>, writers from around the world celebrated history, debated the present and committed to the future of literature and freedom of expression at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/newsitems\/writers-from-across-the-globe-gather-in-the-city-of-ourense-galicia-for-the-82nd-pen-international-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">PEN International\u2019s 82<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup> Congress<\/span><\/a> organized around the theme \u201cBuilding Literary Bridges.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7591\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/09\/PI82-886x1024.jpg\" alt=\"pi82\" width=\"480\" height=\"555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/09\/PI82.jpg 886w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/09\/PI82-260x300.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/09\/PI82-768x888.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/09\/PI82-692x800.jpg 692w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/>Two hundred poets, novelists, dramatists and nonfiction writers from approximately 75 centers of PEN agreed to embark on a three-year global campaign to increase opportunities for displaced writers worldwide. Responding to the unprecedented flow of refugees, migrants, and displaced, all of which include writers and those whose stories need to be told, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/our-history\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">95-year old literary organization<\/span><\/a> will undertake an initiative to put storytelling and literature at the center of an effort to heal and expand opportunities. Through its 145 centers, PEN will develop programs that will include residencies, workshops, mentoring, education and publications. The full scope of the campaign will be announced December 10, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/AboutUs\/Pages\/HumanRightsDay.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Human Rights Day<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1921 out of the chaos and refugee flows after World War I, PEN anticipated and protested the suppression of freedom of expression in Nazi Germany prior to World War II and defended writers throughout Europe during the war, offering haven and setting up PEN centers in exile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPEN responds to the crises of our times,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/who-we-are\/board\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">PEN International President Jennifer Clement<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe are writers. We believe in imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 82<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup> Congress began with heartening and dispiriting news. Iranian-Canadian writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homahoodfar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Homa Hoodfar<\/span><\/a> was released from Iran\u2019s Evin prison at the same time news arrived that Jordanian columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/sep\/25\/jordanian-writer-shot-dead-trial-insulting-islam-nahed-hattar\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Nahed Hattar<\/span><\/a> had been gunned down outside court by a fundamentalist who claimed Nahed deserved to die for his ideas.<\/p>\n<p>This pattern of good and terrible news also emerged in the past year with early releases of imprisoned writers in Tibet, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Qatar and Colombia at the same time the situation deteriorated with more arrests and killings in Bangladesh, China, Turkey, Ukraine and other countries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7617\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PENXEmptyXChair-395x1024.jpg\" alt=\"penxemptyxchair\" width=\"200\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PENXEmptyXChair.jpg 395w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PENXEmptyXChair-116x300.jpg 116w, https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/files\/2016\/10\/PENXEmptyXChair-309x800.jpg 309w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>The tradition of an Empty Chair at the PEN Congress sessions highlighted the cases of imprisoned Egyptian novelist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/aug\/30\/egypt-upholds-ahmed-naji-jail-term-over-sexually-explicit-book-the-use-of-life\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Ahmed Naji<\/span><\/a>, Kurdish journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/newsitems\/turkey-serious-concerns-for-health-of-writer-and-activist-asli-erdogan-denied-water-medication\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Asli Erdogan<\/span><\/a>, Palestinian poet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2016\/08\/10\/dareen-tatour-palestinian-poet-imprisoned-by-israel-for-social-media-posts-shares-her-story\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Dareen Tatour<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/may\/24\/daughter-missing-publisher-gui-minhai-calls-international-help\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Gui Minhai<\/span><\/a>, a bookseller in Hong Kong, who was kidnapped by the Chinese government while he was in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Gui\u2019s daughter, a Swedish citizen as is he, sent a letter to the Congress: \u201cIn the end, this is not about my father as an individual\u2026. This is about China actively extending its control far beyond its own borders. This is about China kidnapping and illegally detaining more and more people because of their political beliefs. It\u2019s about European citizens no longer being able to know that their human rights will be protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discussing \u201cLiterature as a Tool for Empowerment,\u201d delegates shared ongoing projects, including working with young writers in schools and in prisons. Lebanon PEN Center\u2019s delegate noted, \u201cI discovered the tremendous effect from creative writing to express trauma and help people tell their stories. We have 1.3 million Syrians in Lebanon. We have a big responsibility. We see the empowerment of civil society through literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Mali and Sierra Leone, the PEN centers work with students and young people in post-conflict situations.\u00a0 The Mali delegate spoke about workshops with Tuareg warriors who had fought on the battlefield in the Sahara. When they returned home, they had lost their dignity and positions and were migrants so they went to join the ranks of Gadhafi. After Gadhafi was toppled, there was a big problem, he said, and conflict. The Mali PEN Center helped organize writing workshops which led to publishing books. Hundreds attended these workshops and were able to tell their stories and see them published.<\/p>\n<p>PEN\u2019s earliest work to protect writers began when poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poet\/federico-garc%C3%ADa-lorca\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Federico Garcia Lorca<\/span><\/a> was arrested at the beginning of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/spanish-civil-war-breaks-out\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Spanish Civil War<\/span><\/a> in 1936. PEN President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/hg-wells-39224#literary-success\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">H.G. Wells<\/span><\/a> sent a telegram protesting, but it arrived too late and Lorca was executed.
