{"id":8194,"date":"2017-03-29T09:24:53","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T13:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=8194"},"modified":"2017-03-31T10:38:35","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T14:38:35","slug":"hisham-matar-takes-75000-prize-for-book-of-the-year-at-reimagined-pen-america-literary-awards-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/hisham-matar-takes-75000-prize-for-book-of-the-year-at-reimagined-pen-america-literary-awards-ceremony","title":{"rendered":"HISHAM MATAR TAKES $75,000 PRIZE FOR BOOK OF THE YEAR AT REIMAGINED PEN AMERICA LITERARY AWARDS CEREMONY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK\u2013<strong>Hisham Matar<\/strong> was awarded the inaugural PEN\/Jean Stein Book Award for his memoir <em>The Return<\/em> (Penguin Random House) Monday night at the PEN America Literary Awards Ceremony in a dramatic live announcement.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The award presentation topped off a captivating evening of literary celebration centered on the theme \u201cBooks Across Borders\u201d and featuring musical performances, dramatic readings, and celebrity presenters, including host <strong>Aasif Mandvi<\/strong>, author of <em>No Land\u2019s Man<\/em> and former <em>Daily Show<\/em> correspondent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetermined to reject attempts to isolate the United States from the world, we centered this year\u2019s awards ceremony on the power of literature to surmount cultural, ideological, and geographic bounds,\u201d said <strong>Suzanne Nossel<\/strong>, executive director of PEN America. \u201cThough each author and work was chosen based on literary merit, our winners are potent testament to the great many books, plays, and stories that would not exist if people or ideas were kept from traveling across borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization brought in seasoned awards-show producer <strong>Bill Werde<\/strong> to reimagine the annual event, building in elements of video, music, and drama. To celebrate PEN\/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater awardee for Master American Dramatist <strong>Suzan-Lori Parks<\/strong>, actors <strong>Tyrone Mitchell Henderson<\/strong> and <strong>Matthew J. Harris\u00a0<\/strong>performed a scene from Parks\u2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning play <em>Topdog\/Underdog<\/em>, showing now at the Huntington Theatre in Boston under the direction of <strong>Billy Porter<\/strong>. Academy Award-winner <strong>Tarell Alvin McCraney<\/strong> accepted the Pels Award for American Playwright in Mid-Career, announcing that he would donate his prize money to the <strong>African Heritage Cultural Arts Center<\/strong> \u201cso that we can look forward to more writers being told to look forward to the middle of their career.\u201d Popular television host <strong>Tony Kornheiser<\/strong> of ESPN\u2019s <em>Pardon the Interruption<\/em> honored <strong>Bill Nack<\/strong>, author of <em>Secretariat: The Making of a Champion<\/em>, for lifetime achievement in sportswriting.<\/p>\n<p>The evening was punctuated by musical performances that highlighted the ceremony\u2019s emphasis on global influences and the power of stories to build empathy and understanding. <strong>Hamilton Leithauser<\/strong>, lead singer of the Walkmen now touring with Vampire Weekend\u2019s Rostam, offered an acoustic rendition of the late Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cDemocracy\u201d set to images by acclaimed graphic artist <strong>David Mack<\/strong> and animated by Olga Nunes. <strong>Natalie Scenters-Zapico<\/strong> performed her PEN\/Joyce Osterweil Award-winning poem \u201cBecause They Lack Country\u201d about life, love, and identity on the border with musical accompaniment by <strong>Ernesto Villalobos<\/strong> of the Villalobos Brothers,\u00a0today\u2019s leading Contemporary Mexican ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery book arises from conversations with our culture and our history, but also with other books\u2013at least for me in this case, with other paintings and buildings and cities and many individuals living and dead,\u201d said Matar. \u201cBy its very nature, its will for doubt and remembrance and complexity and expansion, literature can hinder the cruel oversimplifications required by every tyrannical gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the PEN\/Jean Stein Book Award, Matar also took a $75,000 purse\u2013one of the largest literary prizes in the country\u2013as well as an original sculpture by artist <strong>Kiki Smith,<\/strong> featuring a bronze acorn to emblematize the original organic source of ink. Other awards announced live on Monday night include the PEN\/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature to <strong>Adonis<\/strong>, known as the greatest living poet\u00a0of the Arab world; the PEN\/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction to <strong>Rion Amilcar Scott<\/strong> for <em>Insurrections<\/em> (University Press of Kentucky), his debut collection of stories; and the PEN\/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay to <strong>Angela Morales<\/strong> for <em>The Girls in My Town<\/em> (University of New Mexico Press), an anthology of essays on her experience as a Mexican-American woman growing up in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1963, the PEN America Literary Awards have honored outstanding voices in literature across a diverse array of genres and styles, celebrating both renowned and emerging authors and translators and helping to advance the careers of many beloved writers, including <strong>Jonathan Safran Foer<\/strong>, <strong>Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie<\/strong>, and <strong>Joshua Ferris<\/strong>. The 2017 PEN America Literary Awards conferred 23 distinct awards, fellowships, grants, and prizes totaling nearly $315,000 across a broad range of categories including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, translation, and more.
