{"id":8196,"date":"2017-03-13T22:29:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T02:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/?p=8196"},"modified":"2017-03-31T11:02:35","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T15:02:35","slug":"pen-supported-translations-a-match-for-english-language-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chinesepen.org\/english\/pen-supported-translations-a-match-for-english-language-titles","title":{"rendered":"PEN-supported translations \u2013 a match for English language titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"article-header\">\n<p class=\"byline\">Posted 13 March 2017 by <a title=\"Posts by Robert Sharp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.englishpen.org\/author\/robert\/\" rel=\"author\">Robert Sharp<\/a> &amp; filed under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishpen.org\/category\/press\/\" rel=\"category tag\">Press<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishpen.org\/category\/translation\/\" rel=\"category tag\">Translation<\/a><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"entry-content cf\">\n<h5 class=\"intro-para\">English PEN has published an evaluation of its first grant-giving programme, PEN Promotes, which has supported literary translation since 2005<!--more--><\/h5>\n<p>The PEN Promotes programme, which ran from 2005 to 2016, gave a total of 96 promotion grants to 28 different UK publishers, most of which were small independents.\u00a0 It was funded by Bloomberg.\u00a0 Award-winning titles include <em>The Iraqi Christ <\/em>by <strong>Hassan Blasim<\/strong> (translated by\u00a0Jonathan Wright), <em>The End of Days<\/em> by <strong>Jenny Erpenbeck<\/strong>\u00a0(translated by Susan Bernofsky) and <em>The Armies<\/em> by <strong>Evelio Rosero<\/strong>\u00a0(translated by Anne McLean) \u2013 all of which won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2012, the Arts Council England-funded programme <strong>PEN Translates<\/strong> has supported publishers\u2019\u00a0translation costs.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PEN Promotes titles outperformed other translated titles from the same publisher<\/li>\n<li>PEN-supported translations perform just as well as English language titles<\/li>\n<li>A majority of publishers surveyed believe the market for translated titles has grown since 2005<\/li>\n<li>Four in every five publishers already involve the translator in the marketing of a book, a practice that English PEN has encouraged<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report, which was researched and written by <strong>Erica Jarnes<\/strong> (English PEN\u2019s Writers in Translation Programme Manager until October 2016) concludes with a recommendation that PEN Promotes evolves into a more flexible grant that will empower publishers to take more risks in promoting their translated titles.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the report, English PEN\u2019s director <strong>Jo Glanville<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n<p><em>We are proud of the crucial role that this programme has played over the last decade, introducing outstanding writers to UK\u00a0readers and demonstrating that translated literature can be just as popular as\u00a0English language books.
