not in nineteen hundred and eighty nine<\/div>\n
i remember<\/div>\n
a huge square<\/div>\n
and huge square buildings<\/div>\n
and a long red wall<\/div>\n
with a portrait of mao<\/div>\n
i remember a monolith<\/div>\n
a statue<\/div>\n
(maybe it was somewhere else?)<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

i remember smartly dressed guards<\/div>\n
around the statue<\/div>\n
and we climbed it to take pictures<\/div>\n
and they couldn\u2019t stop us<\/div>\n
because we were tourists<\/div>\n
who didn\u2019t know any better<\/div>\n
i remember some hotdog-like stand<\/div>\n
and people in blue and white and brown and black and grey<\/div>\n
walking around<\/div>\n
staring at us<\/div>\n
because we were in tight denim jeans<\/div>\n
and tucked in tee shirts<\/div>\n
and high heels<\/div>\n
and they were in pajamas<\/div>\n
i can still see the flat stones<\/div>\n
covering the square<\/div>\n
square stones laid end to end<\/div>\n
and side to side<\/div>\n
hundreds of them<\/div>\n
a greying white in the sunlight<\/div>\n
when i try to see the squares now<\/div>\n
i see thousands of heads<\/div>\n
not squares<\/div>\n
and people in blue and white and brown and black and grey<\/div>\n
and red<\/div>\n
and when i look again<\/div>\n
the stones there are<\/div>\n
greyish white in the sunlight<\/div>\n
some blotched it seems<\/div>\n
with brown that might have been red<\/div>\n
but still square stones<\/div>\n
laid end to end<\/div>\n
and side to side<\/div>\n
hundreds of them<\/div>\n
and no different from each other.<\/div>\n
