Wang Junzhen, father of imprisoned Chinese dissident Dr. Wang Bingzhang, died in the early hours of March 29 in Vancouver, Canada at the age of 87. On his deathbed, Mr. Wang ‘ s last wish was to see Dr. Wang Bingzhang one last time. Regrettably, this wish can no longer be fulfilled. We now appeal the Chinese government grant Dr. Wang bereavement leave to attend his father ‘ s funeral in Vancouver.

Dr. Wang Bingzhang was born in Shenyang, China in 1948. He graduated from Beijing Medical School in 1971 and came to pursue graduate studies in Montreal, Canada in 1979. He received Ph. D degree in Experimental Medicine from McGill University in 1982. In that same year, he founded the first overseas Chinese dissident magazine ” China Spring ” in New York, and later the organization Chinese Alliance for Democracy, thereby commencing a career in democracy activism and never looked back to the medical profession. For more than 20 years, he worked tirelessly on pro democracy activities around the world. On June 27, 2002, on a trip to Vietnam, he disappeared along with two traveling companions. For the next 6 months, there was no news of his where about. On December 20, 2002, Chinese News Agency reported that Wang was detained in China. On February 10, 2002, the Shenzhen Intermediate Court sentenced Dr. Wang to life imprisonment on charges of terrorism and espionage for Taiwan. Notably, no witness was present and no cross examination was conducted. During the hearing, Dr. Wang managed to tell the world that he was kidnapped from Vietnam and smuggled into China. Dr. Wang is now serving life sentence in solitiary confinement in Shaoguan, Guangdong. To protest the daily nine hour psychological torturous political sessions, he had gone on hunger strike. Subsequently he suffered two strokes and is now physically weak and clinical depressed. Based on humanitarian consideration and the filial duty paramount in Chinese social values, we urge the Chinese government to grant Dr. Wang a chance to pay his father final respect at this funeral.
