June 22, 2014 – An editorial published in the South China Morning Post on Sunday believed that Chinese authorities should highly value its civil rights lawyers, whose work helps ease grievances and calms dissent.
It was of the view that while the mainland seeks to overhaul its judiciary system to combat abuse of power and corruption, it should not forget the importance of allowing people who feel that they have been wronged to have their cases fairly heard. It was vital for lawyers to be able to uphold the rule of law without requiring legal representation themselves.
