When tanks rolled into Beijing on June 3, 1989 on the way to a bloody crackdown on Tiananmen Square, Liao Yiwu was at home in Sichuan province. Shocked by news of the tragedy, in which hundreds died, he wrote a long poem that night, entitled “Massacre”.
