Two Writers Honoured Liu Xiaobo Courage to Write Award

Independent Chinese PEN Centre (ICPC) has honoured two imprisoned writers, Dolma Kyab and WU Yilong, the laureates of ICPC’s Liu Xiaobo Courage to Write Award in 2012 for their long-term tenacity and courage in writing regardless of imprisonments. Besides, ICPC have named 8 new honorary members – CHEN Xi, GAO Zhisheng, Tashi Rabten, Kunchok Tsephel Gopey Tsang, Kunga Tseyang, Gangkye Drubpa Kyab, RAO Wenwei and LI Bifeng. Continue reading

ICPC Statement to Protest Severe Sentence of Its Member Zhu Yufu

Independent Chinese PEN Centre (ICPC) is alarmed to have learnt that its member Mr. ZHU Yufu has been sentenced this afternoon by Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court, Zhejiang Province in eastern China, to 7 years imprisonment with further 3 years deprivation of political rights for “inciting subversion of the state power “ after the trial on 31 January. The conviction based on his speech published in the overseas Chinese websites, and interviews with the foreign media and collecting money for other prisoners of conscience.

CHINA: Another writer handed down a lengthy prison term

The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International is dismayed at the conviction of another Chinese writer on subversion charges. Dissident writer Chen Xi was sentenced to ten years in prison on 26 December 2011 for ‘inciting subversion of state power’ in essays published online on overseas websites. Continue reading

CHINA: Writer Chen Wei Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison

The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International condemns the imprisonment of the writer Chen Wei. An honorary member of the Independent Chinese PEN Centre and winner of the Liu Xiaobo Courage to Write award, Chen Wei was sentenced on 23 December 2011 to nine years in prison for ‘subversive writing.’ The conviction is based on articles published on Chinese websites overseas. Three Writers Honored To Liu Xiaobo Courage to Write Awards

On 15 November 2011, Independent Chinese PEN Centre (ICPC) announced that three imprisoned writers, Hada, QIN Yongmin and CHEN Wei, were honored as this year’s laureates of its Liu Xiaobo Courage to Write Award for their long-term tenacity and courage in writing regardless of repeated imprisonments; Besides, ICPC have granted 9 new honorary members, CHEN Wei, LI Tie, Memetjan Abdulla, WANG Lihong (Female), Jangtse Donkho, Buddha, Kalsang Jinpa, Dokru Tsultrim, and WEN Yan (aka SUN Buer). CHINA: Journalist Qi Chonghuai sentenced to a further eight years

The Writers in Prison Committee of PEN International protests the additional eight-year sentence handed down to freelance journalist Qi Chonghuai on 9 June 2011, two weeks before the end of his four-year sentence for extortion and blackmail. It is widely believed that he is targeted for his critical reporting, and for letters smuggled out of prison in 2009 alleging ill-treatment. Continue reading

CHINA/INNER MONGOLIA: Leading activist and editor Hada remains detained; fears for safety.

The Writers in Prison Committee of PEN International is seriously concerned by the reported continued detention of Hada, editor of The Voice of the Southern Mongolia and leading rights activist, who completed a fifteen-year prison term for his dissident writings on 10 December 2010 but has apparently not been released. A family source confirmed on 4 May 2011 that Hada’s wife and son have also been held since early December 2010, apparently on politically motivated charges. PEN considers Hada to be detained in violation of his rights to freedom of expression as guaranteed under Article 19 of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which China is a signatory, and continues to call for his immediate and unconditional release. PEN is also seeking assurances of his well being from the Chinese authorities, and details of any further charges against him. Continue reading
